A wee picture of me. The man...

...and his desk A wee picture of my desk.

The picture of the desk is to illustrate that well known proverb... "A tidy desk is the sign of a sick mind!"

General Background Information

I graduated from Glasgow University with an honours degree in Computer Science in July 1984 (I think...). I then completed a one year course in teacher training at Jordanhill College - now known as the University of Strathclyde, Faculty of Education (read the history if you are desperate to know more about this momentous event).

I taught Computing and Mathematics in a Secondary school for a while before eventually finding my way back to Jordanhill via a Technical and Vocational Education Initiative (TVEI) pilot project.

I work in the Department of Business and Computer Education, University of Strathclyde, Faculty of Education. (Although I note with interest that we are officially known as, "The University of Strathclyde in Glasgow"... Ours is not to reason why...) Mostly I am involved with the one year Postgraduate Certificate of Education (training Computing teachers) although I teach on various other courses as well. Until recently I was the Course Director for the Postgraduate Awards in Educational Computing.

Schools and the Internet

I am very keen that schools should be able to make good use of the Internet. Currently this is being promoted by many as "a good thing" but I am concerned that the emphasis is all to often on the technology rather than the pedagogy. Every school in the UK may be conneted to the Internet by 2002... but what will they do once they are there?

Some of the publications and web pages listed below were created to support learners and teachers as they start to explore the Internet.

In particular, I co-authored the book Schools in Cyberspace to give schools a practical guide to the Internet.

Web Pages

One of the first set of Web pages I crated was the education sites list. This is very out of date now, and I do not intend to update them in the near future.

I also created a set of pages to support the Communications Systems and Networks section of Higher Grade Computing which focuses on the Higher's Themes. I have also started a more general set of pages to support the teaching of Computing Studies.

Just for fun, I have recently added the Calculator Words pages.

I also put together a set of links for the Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Secondary) course.

Two larger sites are the CyberOlympics pages which describe an international sporting competition organised over the internet, and a set of pages to support Schools in Cyberspace, a book which I co-authored.

Other pages include a far from comprehensive Music List for the BA Applied Music course and a page with a list of resources to help people design web pages (particularly teachers).

Also of interest are the Romans pages which were created by a class of Primary children and submitted by their teacher as part of the assessment for the Schools in Cyberspace module. This module was part of the Postgraduate Awards in Educational Computing course.
