Introduction

This collection of links is provided by the PGCE(S) course of the University of Strathclyde. If you have any suggestions for additions to this collection, please e-mail them to d.d.muir@strath.ac.uk who will include them in future versions of this list. These links may help you with the teaching of your subject in schools. The list is far from comprehensive (only a few departments provided suggested links) so a copy of SCET's Bookmark Collection can be accessed below.

General links of interest to Scottish teachers include the Scottish Virtual Teachers' Centre or the English Virtual Teachers' Centre. The government sees the virtual teachers' centres as a key part of the The National Grid for Learning initiative. (See also the government's The National Grid for Learning documents pages.)

Information about the current availability of Information and Communication Technology in Scottish schools can be found at the SCET Annual Survey of Listening, Viewing and use of Microcomputers. A summary of The Internet in Secondary Schools document is also worth reading although it deals mainly (exclusively?) with schools in England.

There are many good UK based sites with information on educational uses of technology, for example BECTa. The BBC Education site is well worth a look, particularly the BBC Webwise and BBC Education Web Guide sections. The Schools in Cyberspace pages offer an number of theme related links. and there are many more good lists outside the UK, for example Gander Academy, a Canadian school, has a Themes Related Resources page.

The The Times Supplement is available online. As well as displaying the articles from the current edition, the The Times Supplement online also has a searchable archive of past articles and a searchable list of jobs.

For other UK Education related sites try the Scottish Qualifications Authority and the Scottish Office pages (in particular the Guidelines for Initial Teacher Education Courses in Scotland and SOEID Guidance on the use of ICT within Courses of Initial Teacher Education pages).

Professional Bodies

Many of the professional bodies associated with education have their own websites. The Bookmark Collection has The General Teaching Council for Scotland is a statutory body, formally established by the Teaching Council (Scotland) Act 1965. Its overarching role is the maintenance and wherever possible the enhancement of professional standards. All its activities are directed towards improving the quality of teaching in Scotland.. Both the Scottish Consultative Council on the Curriculum and Scottish Council for Research in Education have useful information.

The main teaching unions also have have information on the web:

Computing

An excellent source of definitions can be found at the Free On-line Dictionary of Computing. This contains definitions of just about every computing term and acronym you can think of and is updated on a regular basis. (For one of the more light hearted entries, try looking up the definition of TLA.)

Support for the Computing curriculum can be found at the Higher Grade Themes page and the School Computing page.

The National Association for Co-ordinators and Teachers of IT  page also makes intersting reading.

English

The first English link is actually Scottish! The Scuil Wab is a web site written in Scots and aimed specifically at schools and school children. It is hosted on the Scottish National Dictionary Association site.

Various authors have pages dedicated to them and their works, for example the Jane Austen Information Page, the Roald Dahl Home Page and the C.S. Lewis Page. For Shakespeare you could try the Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare 4 Kids and the Globe Theatre

The Children's Literature page at Jordanhill Library is also provides useful information.

Mathematics

A very useful resource is BBC Education's Schools page which includes Maths File.

The Online Maths Club offers a variety of mathematical games and puzzles.

Music

Jordanhill Library has a useful set of music related links.
