Introduction

This collection of links is provided by the Business and Computer Education Department of the University of Strathclyde. These links may help you with the teaching of Computing in schools. Included in this collection of pages are converted versions of paper based pupil and teacher materials which were developed as part of inservice courses. It seemed sensible to make the material more widely available since the courses have not run for some time and, with the development of Higher Still, some may have a limited shelf life!

If you have any suggestions for additions to this collection, please send them to d.d.muir@strath.ac.uk who may include them in future versions.

General

Information about the current availability of Information and Communication Technology in Scottish schools can be found in School Survey of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), October 1999. Previous Scottish surveys can be found at the SCET Annual Survey of Listening, Viewing and use of Microcomputers. A summary of The Internet in Secondary Schools document is also worth reading although it deals mainly (exclusively?) with schools in England.

An excellent source of definitions can be found at the Free On-line Dictionary of Computing. This contains definitions of just about every computing term and acronym you can think of and is updated on a regular basis. (For one of the more light hearted entries, try looking up the definition of TLA.

There are many links which are of general interest to Scottish teachers.

National Qualifications (Higher Still)

Not a lot here at the moment... Just some links that might help with the Computing Higher, in particular the systems unit, the multimedia unit and the networking unit.

General Purpose Packages

A series of tasks were prepared to support the teaching of this section of Higher Grade Computing (although some of the tasks may be useful in other contexts). The pages are formatted so that, if you wish, they can be printed and used as worksheets. Myrmidon was used to do the original conversion from Word documents to Web pages, but they were then heavily edited in Home Page to get them into the format presented here.

The first set of tasks converted relate to Objects and Operations. Pupils are invited to analyse to different documents by considering the objects they contain and the operations which would have to be performed to produce the documents. The tasks are not dissimilar to a question in the 1992 Higher Grade Paper 1, question 1. Further practical investigations are suggested.
