Getting Started: Familiarisation Task

Purpose

This task encourages you to think about your motivation for taking this course, familiarises you with using the discussion facilities and gives you an opportunity to find out something about your fellow course participants.

Task

As an introduction to the module we ask that you browse through some materials on assessment and feedback that are available on the World Wide Web. Looking at some sites will give you an overview of the study topic.

Two sites are given here but you are encouraged to search the web for any other sites that might be helpful to the group. These will then be added to the resources section of this web site.

'About Assessment' published by The Teaching and Educational Development Institute, The University of Queensland. This is a general site on assessment. http://www.tedi.uq.edu.au/assess/assessment

'Assessment and Classroom Learning'. This site provides a summary of a key journal article (by Black & Wiliam) on formative assessment and feedback. http://english.unitecnology.ac.nz/resources/resources/classroom_learning.html

Identify something that you found interesting from your initial browsing (e.g. how the ideas in a particular site relate to your own experience of assessment and feedback or questions that were raised in your mind as you explored the site).

Assessment

As the assessment for this task we ask that you:

  1. introduce yourself to the other course participants by posting something about yourself on the discussion form of the class website as well as your intial reflections about formative assessment and feedback based on your browsing of the assessment sites (e.g. ideas, important issues, questions raised etc.
  2. post your information in discussion forum: getting started
These initial posting are an integral part of the course. The tutor will read the postings, identify and give feedback on the common themes and help resolve any technical difficulties.
